Samkoma: Coming Together in the 1960 and 70’s
The New Iceland Heritage Museum is working on a new exhibit and looking for photographs of Icelandic souvenirs, t-shirts, and memorabilia from the 1960s and 70s to be considered in our temporary exhibit, “Samkoma: Coming Together in the 1960s and 70s.”
Do you have any 1960s or 70s Icelandic or Viking-themed local treasures you might be willing to loan temporarily? Please post below or DM us with photographs of your 60s or 70s Gimli, New Iceland, and Icelandic treasures– as well as any special souvenirs from Iceland during this period (Nothing after 1980). We are on the hunt for:
Special items related to the unveiling of the Viking statue or other major Manitoba Icelandic celebrations in the 1960s and 70s.
Viking or Icelandic local t-shirts, hats, and buttons from the 1960s + 70s
Viking or Icelandic local commemorative plates, tea-towels, statues, and other souvenir items from the 1960s and 70s
Souvenirs from your family’s trips to Iceland in the 1960s and 70s (lava pottery, textiles, commemorative plates, etc.)
Icelandair or other Icelandic travel memorabilia from the 1960s and 70s, (airline tickets, bags, airplane ephemera, etc.)
The exhibit will explore the valuable impact of 1960s and 70s centennial celebrations, trips, and heritage campaigns on the community. Once we receive the image of your object we will pass it along to our designer to see if it can fit and will notify you afterwards. Thanks in advance for sharing images of your keepsakes!
